ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro, the two primary desktop applications for GIS professionals, are both part of ArcGIS Desktop. ArcMap and its companion application, ArcCatalog, as well as ArcGlobe and ArcScene, work together to provide a full spectrum of GIS capabilities. These applications are the focus of this help system. Information about ArcGIS Pro, the newest member of this group, is available at http://pro.arcgis.com.

Install and set up

  1. Go to My Esri and log in to download ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap).
    Note:

Your account must have permission to download software from the downloads area within My Esri.

  2. Review the system requirements before you initiate the installation program.
  3. Start the installation program; it will step you through the process. Refer to the Installation Guide for complete details.
    Note:

The installation program is designed to detect and upgrade existing installations; you do not need to explicitly uninstall versions 10.1 or later.

  4. Once installation completes, you need to authorize the software. The ArcGIS Administration Wizard helps you do this.
    License:

If you're upgrading a single use instance of ArcGIS Desktop, your existing software authorization number is still valid and will work with ArcGIS 10.5 or 10.5.1.

If you run a concurrent use instance of ArcGIS Desktop, the license server you connect to for authorization must be running ArcGIS License Manager 10.5.1.

Installation is complete. If you're a new user, start ArcMap and begin with a tutorial. If you're an existing user, see What's new in ArcMap.

Begin with a tutorial

10.5.1

A collection of tutorials is included with ArcGIS Desktop. These require that the ArcGIS Tutorial Data for Desktop component be installed. This component is a separate download available on My Esri.

In addition, the Learn ArcGIS site hosts a number of lessons built around real-world projects and problems that cover the breadth of the ArcGIS platform. A few of these are highlighted below.

In the Get Started with ArcMap set of lessons, build your knowledge of ArcMap and GIS while determining how much of the Amazon rainforest was saved from deforestation when a proposal to build a road was denied. Learn how to do the following:

  • Add data to a map.
  • Analyze relationships between data.
  • Digitize features.
  • Symbolize and organize data.

Bridging the Breast Cancer Divide uses a spatial problem solving approach to analyze discrepancies in mortality rates for breast cancer. Learn how to do the following:

  • Explore maps and perform visual analysis.
  • Add fields, select features, and calculate values.
  • Perform hot spot analysis.
  • Interpret findings.

The Homeless in the Badlands set of lessons uses ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro to look at a surprising negative effect of the oil boom in North Dakota, a lack of housing for workers. Learn how to do the following:

  • Add ArcGIS Pro data to ArcMap.
  • Join tabular data to spatial data.
  • Publish a layer to ArcGIS Pro.
  • Create and symbolize web maps.

Create a basemap of a 100-plot community garden in Mapping the Public Garden; then, turn it into a map-based app for communicating with plot holders. Learn how to do the following:

What's new in ArcGIS

ArcMap is one component of ArcGIS. The following resources connect you to what's new across the entire ArcGIS platform:

  • Complete list of what's new in ArcMap
  • What's new in ArcGIS Pro, the other application in the ArcGIS Desktop family

Getting started

  • ArcGIS Desktop includes many components. See What's included for a list of components.
  • Review the ArcGIS system requirements for the component.
  • Administrative privileges are required for installation.
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 or later is required.
  • Download and install the component. If upgrading, review Upgrading to ArcGIS 10.5.1.
  • Obtain your software authorization numbers and authorize the software. If using a Concurrent Use license, you will need ArcGIS License Manager 10.5.1, which can be used for all ArcGIS 10.x Concurrent Use licenses. See the ArcGIS License Manager quick start guide and the License Manager reference guide for more information.
  • See ArcGIS Desktop for access to additional resources, such as documentation and support.

What's included

ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1 includes the following components:

  • ArcGIS Desktop—Installation for Basic, Standard, and Advanced editions of ArcGIS Desktop, and optional ArcGIS extension products.
  • ArcGIS Desktop Background Geoprocessing (64 bit)—Installation for background geoprocessing in 64 bit.
  • Database Server (Desktop)—Installation for SQL Server Express instance to store geodatabases.
  • ArcGIS License Manager (Windows and Linux)—This version is required to run ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1 and ArcGIS Engine 10.5.1 with Concurrent Use licensing. It also supports all other ArcGIS 10.x Concurrent Use releases.
  • ArcReader—Desktop mapping application that allows users to view, explore, and print maps and globes.
  • ArcGIS Tutorial Data for Desktop—Data used with ArcGIS Desktop tutorials.
  • ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data—Contains the data files required for the GEOCON transformation method and vertical transformation files for the United States (VERTCON and GEOID12B) and the world (EGM2008).

Additional licensed extensions are available as separate downloads:

Language packs

The following ArcGIS components have localized setups. Language pack setups are also available to apply additional languages to existing installations of the component.

  • ArcGIS Desktop
  • ArcReader
  • ArcGIS Data Reviewer
  • ArcGIS Workflow Manager

Upgrading to ArcGIS 10.5.1

  • The ArcGIS 10.5.1 setup package is designed to detect and upgrade an existing installation of the same ArcGIS product. The settings for the installation location, license manager (for Concurrent Use), or authorization information (for Single Use) are retained in the upgrade. See the installation guide for more information on installation upgrades, new installations, or installations over versions earlier than 10.1, which are not supported by the upgrade process.
  • Existing ArcGIS 10.1–10.5 authorization numbers will work with ArcGIS 10.5.1.
  • ArcGIS 10.5.1 for Single Use—If ArcGIS 10.5.1 will be installed on a machine that is different from where an earlier ArcGIS 10.x product is currently installed and you want to use the existing ArcGIS 10.1–10.5 authorization number for ArcGIS 10.5.1, the earlier version of an ArcGIS 10.x product must first be deauthorized before authorizing ArcGIS 10.5.1.
